Dr. Hoyt Blackwell was president of Mars Hill
College from 1938 until 1966, which was a period
of enormous growth and development for the
college, including the transition from junior
college to senior college. The first senior class
graduated in 1964.
Prior to his appointment as president, Dr.
Blackwell was a professor of Greek and Bible at
the college and also served Piney Mountain
Baptist Church as pastor for several years.
(When I attended that church years afterward,
members, including some of my kin, still spoke of
him with love and respect.)
