Julius William "Bill" Childers enlisted 17 Dec 1942 at Camp Croft in South Carolina as a Private
(branch "Warrant Officers").
By the time of his death in 1946, he was in the Air Force and had risen to the rank of Staff
Sergeant in the 769th Bomber Squadron of the 462nd Bomber Group, 20th Air Force.
The date of his death was recorded as 27 May 1946, with status of Missing In Action. The military
record notes a monument "Tablets of The Missing At Honolulu Memorial", Honolulu, Hawaii, and
the burial plot is described as "Missing in Action or Buried at Sea".
His military awards included the Purple Heart Medal, an Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters,
and a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Julius William Childers, ASN 345 96008, 770th Bomber
Squadron, 462 Bomber Group . . . There's no date on the
picture, but Bill was a Sgt. at the time - not a Staff Sgt."
