Note: The Dowdle homeplace on Mingus Creek, around 1899, is referred to by Francis David Childers in a 1976 interview.
The 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses all show the family in the Oconalufty area. By 1920, Sarah was a widow and
head of the household, and again in 1930, she was head of the household, which included Amy, James II, and Edward,
along with married son Alfred, his wife Maudie, and their one-year-old son Ray.
When Sarah Green Dowdle died in 1937, in Logan Co, WV, the informant was her son, Ira H. Dowdle. As his social security
number was issued in West Virginia, we may surmise that he worked there and his mother spent her last years in his care.
(When he died in 1960, he was back in Swain County, NC.)
