From John Hibbard's enlistment record for the War of 1812, we can glean some important information. He was born in Franklin County, Virginia, around 1779. He was 6' 3/4" in height, with light hair and "fair" skin. He listed his occupation as "laborer". He enlisted, in 1813, for a period of five years, as a private, was promoted to corporal in January, 1815, and then procured a substitute and was discharged in May 1815. He served in the 43 Regiment, in Captain Robert Love's company.
