Zebulon B. Hopson
30 October 1858 - 28 April 1927
Yancey Co NC      -      Buncombe Co NC
Richard Dillingham, longtime resident of the Ivy community and a local
historian, tells of hearing stories of Zeb Hopson from
Professor John
McLeod of Mars Hill College, from his own father Burnett Dillingham,
and from his neighbor,
Bascombe Chambers.

According to those accounts, Zeb Hopson was a lifelong bachelor
who lived in a small shack near Morgan Hill Church, in north
Buncombe County. While eccentric and reclusive, he was a very
gifted fiddler – some said a genius -- and attracted loyal fans among
the young people of the neighborhood. Sometimes they would gather
at his place in the hope of hearing him play his violin. He might or
might not be in the mood to play, and if he was, he might require a
long, long time to tune his violin to his satisfaction. But when he
eventually did play, it was generally agreed that his was the sweetest
music they had ever heard.
