Doyle Howie proposed marriage  to
Phena Shepherd as they were sitting on
the porch near the steps, resting from
their walk down Hobson Branch Road
from the Shepherd home.

This is a detail from the drawing on a
surviving meal bag, given to Phena by her
brother Jack.

See the meal bag, and more
about the mill.

Wyandotte, Michigan - early 1950's

Like many southern families, the young Howie
family moved north to look for work in the early
1950's. They settled in Wyandotte, MI, near where
husband Doyle found a job at Ford Motor
Company. Eager for a familiar setting in which to
worship, they soon joined a small new Southern
Baptist congregation meeting temporarily in an old
dry-docked ship. Quickly the group pooled
resources to acquire land and build a new church
at the corner of Haskell Street & Caroline Street,
on the west side of Wyandotte. The Howies
purchased a window for the new church, called
Glen Eden Baptist Church. See photos at the right
of the building as it appeared recently, now
occupied by a different congregation. Photos by
