A Student-Passenger's Memory
Through nine years of public school attendance, from the fall of 1952 until the spring of 1962, I rode the number 36 school bus from our place on Barnardsville Road, back and forth to Flat Creek Elementary School, and later to North Buncombe High School. During those years (and decades before) the steady hands at the wheel were those of Mr. Harold Morgan. He was such a dependable, gentle presence that we never imagined there could be any other driver. He was a quiet, perhaps shy, man, not given to extremes of expression; he greeted his small boarding passengers with the hint of a smile. In case of rowdiness on board, he could squelch it -- such was the respect he inspired -- with nothing more than a stern look in the big rearview mirror, and perhaps, in rare cases, a barely raised voice. In the time between driving the morning and afternoon school-bus routes, he farmed at the old Morgan home place just below Morgan Hill Baptist Church, named, like the community itself, for his ancestors. -- Dwight Childers 3 April 2010
