Horace Winfred Sams 1 June 1886 - April 1980 Buncombe County, NC Buncombe County, NC
I had the good fortune to know Mr. Horace Sams when I was a member of Piney Mountain Baptist Church from the 1950's through the mid 1960's. He was a long-time member and deacon of the church. I remember him as a trim, upright gentleman with silver hair. He was reticent and dignified, but he sang with a strong tenor voice which gave the congregation a helpful boost when singing hymns.
Mr. Sams was well respected among the congregation. Despite his reserved manner -- he rarely addressed the congregation -- whatever he said was given much weight in the deliberations of the deacons.
The Sams family lived on lower Stockton Branch. Their neat bungalow style house sat above the road on the hill, overlooking the fertile fields where Mr. Sams grew tobacco and vegetable crops. His fields always looked green and vibrant, with never a stray weed visible, and were much admired by other farmers in the community as well as those who passed along Stockton Branch Road.
