William Truman Shepard Sr.

Charlotte – William Truman Shepard Sr., 69, of Charlotte, was born June 24, 1938, in Weaverville, and
passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at University Hospital in Charlotte.

Mr. Shepard graduated from Enka High School in Enka, and Cecil Business College in Asheville. He was
employed with and retired from Roadway Express, Inc., after 35 years of service. Since his retirement
from Roadway, he has met with other retirees (friends), regularly for dinner and social time.

Mr. Shepard was a beloved husband and was happily married to his wife, Shirley Goble Shepard, for 48
years. He was a loving dad to four children, and a loving granddaddy to nine grandchildren and five step-
grandchildren. Mr. Shepard was a family man and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with each of his kids
and grandkids.

His offbeat sense of humor and contagious laugh were two of his most memorable characteristics. He
loved being outdoors and beautifying his yard with flowering hanging baskets and planter boxes. They
never failed to receive compliments. The golden finches, bluebirds, woodpeckers, cardinals and
hummingbirds flocked to the many feeders provided among the flowers to visit with him. Mr. Shepard was
an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver and Scrabble enthusiast. He was a collector of hound dogs and
spent some of his free time building models. He and his wife were loyal Panther fans and didn't miss
watching their games together.

Mr. Shepard was preceded in death by his parents, Gay Truman Shepard and Faye Ballenger Shepard.
He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Heather Kristin Pasley.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Goble Shepard; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and John
Cruse, of Mooresville, Kathy and Phil Meeks, of Indian Trail, Alisa and Jonathan Brake, of Advance; and
son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Karla Shepard, of Harrisburg. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren,
an aunt, Emilie Rice, and a niece and nephew.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harrisburg United Methodist Church, 4560
Hwy. 49 S., Harrisburg, NC 28075, by Pastor Jonathan Brake and Pastor Dan Hester.

There will be a private family burial in Asheville at a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff and security at Carolina's Medical Center-University, in Charlotte,
for all their assistance.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Truman's memory to St. Jude's Children's
Research Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, TN 38105.

McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212, is in
charge of arrangements.
