Augustus Nathaniel Shepherd was the first child, born in 1866, of John Wesley Shepherd and Matilda
Riddle Shepherd. When the Shepherd families moved from Yancey County to north Buncombe
County in 1896, Augustus was already thirty years old, married to Sarah Eliza Blankenship, and living
with their four young children in Haywood County, NC. By 1898 the family had moved to Polk County,
TN. Then they were in Georgia in 1899. By 1906, they were back in Polk County, TN. By 1920, they
were living in Knoxville, TN, where they remained.
Bergie Shepherd Hobson, interviewed in 1974, called her Uncle Gus a “wanderer,” and said that her
father Henry Taylor Shepherd would always help Gus’s family move from one place to the next.
