When Elizabeth Horton died in 1838, her four daughters ranged in age from about 5 to about 12.
In 1850, Joseph Shepherd, an innkeeper, was married to Margaret A [unknown] (born in Virginia), and daughters Julia and Therressa were still at home. The household included also Robert B. V. Jervis, 22, teacher; William C. Singletary, 21, physician; and Eli A. Warlick, 22, a "Daguerrian Artist" (i.e., a photographer, presumably); and a boy, George W. Rowland, 12.
Joseph Shepherd's Last Will and Testament (1857) bequeathed "the Place where I now live" to his daughter "June" Amanda Broyles, but left another house with land ("the Adams lots") plus $100 to his second wife Margaret on condition that she remain in Burnsville. (If she chose not to remain, then she was to receive $1000 plus one horse and all her household furniture. As this option was offered first, it may have been the expected -- or desired? -- choice.)
In the Yancey census for 1860, Margaret Shepherd, age about 60, does not appear to be present. However, in that year and still in 1870, there was a Margaret Shepherd, of similar age to Joseph's wife, born in Virginia, living with the family of Daniel Burgess Barkley, nearby across the mountain, in Washington County, TN. (He was a well-to-do retail "dry-goods" merchant, with real estate valued at $3600 and personal property worth $3814 (1870 census)). Margaret's occupation was 'retired'. Is this woman in Washington Co TN Joseph Shepherd's second wife?
