The 1870 census for Caney River, Yancey Co NC, lists "Luciller" as the wife of Israel J. Shepherd.
The household includes Mary Roberts, age 3. Presumably, Mary is Lucille's daughter by a previous
husband. On 9 June 1880, when the 1880 census was taken, Luciller was absent, and Israel Jackson
Shepherd was listed as widowed. Mary Roberts, age 13, was still present, listed as "Robert M" (last
name, first name), female, with a large "X" across the surname -- perhaps the census taker's way of
indicating that Mary was not his daughter.
