This small portrait of John Wesley Shepherd, in his Confederate States uniform, was found July 2008
by Stephen A. Shepherd in a trunk in the attic of his childhood home in Maryland as he was preparing
the house for sale. It is bound in leather, with a gold embossed mat. Along with it were many Asheville,
NC, newspaper clippings apparently sent to his father Talmage over the years to keep him informed
about local events. Judging by his appearance, we may assume the photo dates to the early 1860's,
when he would have been preparing to leave for military service.
