Joseph Shepherd
1794 - 1860
Joseph Shepherd was born December 11, 1794,
Wilkes County, N. C. and died in Yancy County, N. C.
- Philip Underwood-Shepherd, "The Descendants of
Thomas Shepherd".
"Joseph Shepherd . . . was the son of Thomas Sr. and
Nancy (Stanton) Shepherd. He married Elizabeth
Horton, known as "Betsey", the daughter of Zephaniah
and Jane (McCurry) Horton."
"Joseph became an innkeeper in Burnsville, Yancey
County, N. C. before the Civil War, his inn being
located where the Nu-Wray Inn now stands. He became
a big land owner in the County, and an influential man
in his neighborhood."
