According to the National Park Service (http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm) . . . .

Grandison Shepherd served in the
NC 58th Infantry, dying of infection from measles in 1862. That
same year his youngest brother, Thomas Erwin Shepherd, enlisted in that same regiment after serving
in the NC 29th Infantry Regiment (see below).

These three brothers served in the
NC 29th Infantry Regiment:

Erwin Shepherd, Company B, Rank Private, enlisting 7 March 1861 or 3 July 1861

Mitchell G. Shepherd, Companies D and B, Rank Private, enlisting 3 July 1861

Wesley Shepherd, Company B, Rank Private, enlisting 7 March 1861

Ephraim Mannon Shepherd served in the
NC 16th Infantry Regiment.

Later in the war, both Mitchell G. Shepherd and John Wesley Shepherd were in the
NC 3rd Mounted
Infantry Regiment (Union).

We know that Dorothy Jones Shepherd was a widow by 1860. We don't know when she died in the
following years, but we may imagine her feelings as all these sons marched off to war.
