"George Shook settled in Pennsylvania in 1740 before moving to Burke County (now
Haywood County)."

"Jacob Shook came to Clyde in 1786 and secured a large tract of land embracing most
of what is now Clyde, North Carolina."

"We know that our Great Grandfather, George Penland was living at Clyde in the 1800's
when the 'Methodist Bishop on Horseback' Francis Asbury rode into the mountains to
establish the Methodist churches, because George Penland married one of the Shook
girls at Clyde. Her name was Emily Shook, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Shook,
hosted Francis Asbury in their home each time he came through the mountains. A small
chapel was set up in their home as a commemoration and for his use."
