According to David A. Harris ("Something About Some Smiths", Tallahassee, FL, July, 1969), Joseph
Smith and his family lived at the head of Reems Creek before losing their land to "sharpers" and
moving to a place near the Jarretts, at what is now called Dryman Mountain west of the French Broad
River. (p. 6)

Joseph Smith, with his sons Samuel and Nathan, "cut out" the first wagon way through Swannanoa
Gap. David Harris explains that this involved merely clearing enough trees and stumps to allow a
wagon to pass rather than any attempt to level the grade. (Harris, p. 6.)
